Transgender Woman Stabbed, Injured in Northeast DC

A transgender woman was stabbed multiple times in Northeast, D.C. Tuesday afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Police received reports of a stabbing on the 1500 block of West Virginia Avenue in Northeast Washington about 12:05 p.m.

When police arrived, the woman had managed to get to 13th and Bryant streets, a few blocks away, but police are not sure how.

The woman was conscious and breathing, police said. Investigators have not released any information about the attacker.

Local transgender activist Earline Budd said she knows the victim and said she is in her 30s.

The woman was stabbed in the neck and chest and is in critical condition, Budd said.

This is the second violent crime against a transgender woman in Northeast D.C. in the past month.

A transgender woman died after she was shot in Washington, D.C., on the Fourth of July. Police are investigating her death as a homicide, NBC Washington previously reported.

Deeniquia “Dee Dee” Doods, 22, was taken off life support nine days after she was attacked on July 4 just a few blocks from home, on the 200 block of Division Avenue, NE, police said.

“Her murder reminds us all of how often the transgender community is targeted for violence in our society,” Budd said of Doods’ death.

A spokesperson for MPD said the department has not noticed an uptick in crimes against transgender people.

“In that particular case [the stabbing], because it’s so early in the investigation, we don’t even know if it’s related to the gender of the victim,” the spokesperson said.
